Geronimo (Jur-ahn´-moh), or Goyathlay ( One who yawns ). was born in 1829 in what is today western New Mexico, but was back then still Mexican territory. He was a Bendokohe Apache (Grandson of Mahko) by birth and a Net´na during his youth and early manhood.
Geronimo is one of the most known Apache-warrior today. A man who indefatigable fought against the American soldiers in the southwest. He was repeatedly captured, but somehow he always manage to escape, and continue his fight for freedom in the wild and unreliable mountains. Finally, 3000 soldiers were sent out to locate Geronimo and his 42 warriors. Once again he manage to escape. But when he found out that his family had been removed to Florida he decided to surrender. Geronimo died on the17th of February 1909 after a pneumonia... 

 

The soldiers never explained to the goverment when a Indian was wronged, but reported the missdeeds of the Indians. We took an oath not to do any wrong to each other or to scheme against each other.

His name Geronimo was reportedly given to him by Mexican soldiers.
